Carpentry Cost in Singapore: What Actually Changes the Price?

Updated: Aug 17
The cost of carpentry in Singapore is not decided by one price per foot run. Two cabinets with the same length can have very different prices because the board, door finish, hardware, internal fittings, height, lighting, site condition and installation work may be different. A useful quotation tells you what you are paying for, not only how many feet of cabinets you are buying.
What does carpentry cost usually include?
For most built-in carpentry, the quote should cover the cabinet structure, doors or fronts, surface finish, standard hardware, fabrication and installation. Some quotations also include internal accessories, special hinges, drawer systems, lighting components, delivery, site protection or local amendment work. Others price these separately. This is why a low unit rate can be misleading when the scope is not the same.
1. The cabinet board changes the price
Plywood, MDF, particle-based panels, waterproof boards and other speciality boards do not solve the same problem. The exact manufacturer, grade, thickness, surface finish and performance data matter. A quote that only says “wood” or “board” gives a homeowner too little information to compare properly. Ask for the actual material specification for the cabinet box, shelves, backing and doors.
2. Door design can cost more than the cabinet box
A simple flat laminated door is different from a routed, painted, fluted, glass, metal-framed, or specially shaped front. The door may need different machinery, finishing steps, edge treatment and quality control. If you are comparing quotations, check whether the door construction and finish are actually the same. A cheaper cabinet with a basic door is not a fair comparison with a cabinet using a more complex front.

3. Hardware affects daily use and the final price
Hinges, drawer runners, lift systems, pull-out mechanisms and soft-closing hardware can change both cost and user experience. Brand alone is not enough. Ask for the model or series where it matters, especially for wide drawers, heavy doors or special mechanisms. The hardware should suit the size and expected load of the cabinet.
4. Internal accessories are often where budgets grow
Pull-out baskets, wardrobe trays, jewellery drawers, corner systems, trouser racks, mirrors, pantry mechanisms and other organisers can be useful, but they should solve a real storage problem. Adding accessories after a base quotation can make the final amount look very different from the first figure. Ask for them to be listed clearly before you compare suppliers.
5. Height, depth and cabinet complexity matter
A full height cabinet uses more material and may need more doors, panels, hardware and installation work than a low cabinet of the same width. Deep cabinets, curved details, open shelves, display niches and mixed materials also change production. Price per foot run does not describe these differences well because it only measures length.
6. Lighting and electrical coordination add another layer
Cabinet lights, sensors and drivers need space, access and cable routes. The carpenter may prepare recesses and integrate selected components, while the electrician handles the electrical points, wiring and connection. If lighting is planned late, extra cutting or amendment work may be needed. Confirm what is included in the carpentry quote and what belongs to the electrician.
7. Installation, local amendments and aftersales have value
A cabinet is not finished when it leaves the workshop or factory. It still needs to reach the home, fit the actual site, align correctly and remain serviceable after handover. Ask who handles installation, suitable local amendments, defects, replacement parts and warranty matters. A quotation should make responsibility clear before work starts.
How should you compare two carpentry quotations?
Put the quotations side by side and compare the same cabinet component. Check the dimensions, board specification, door material, finish, hardware, accessories, lighting provision, installation scope and warranty.
That said, a true apple to apple comparison is not always easy, especially when comparing carpentry cost in Singapore. Different factories, contractors and designers may structure their quotations differently, bundle items together or specify materials in different ways. A lower price does not always mean better value, just as a higher price does not always mean better quality.
Instead of focusing only on matching every line item, make sure you are comfortable with the overall price, design proposed, specifications and scope of work. Spend first on what affects durability, daily function and ease of maintenance. Premium accessories can always be added where they genuinely improve how you use the space.
Is factory-produced carpentry automatically cheaper?
No. Factory production can improve planning, machining consistency, quality control and access to a wider range of materials and components, but the final price still depends on your design, material choice, hardware and project scope.
The bigger difference is whether you are dealing directly with the factory or paying through several layers of middlemen. A direct factory model can reduce unnecessary markups while giving you better control over specifications and where your budget is spent.
That does not mean factory-produced carpentry is always the best choice. Traditional local carpentry may make more sense for certain items, while some parts of your home may not need built-in carpentry at all. A well-chosen loose furniture piece can sometimes be more practical, flexible and cost-effective.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is price per foot run enough to compare carpentry cost in Singapore?
No. It is useful as a rough unit, but it does not explain cabinet height, depth, board type, door finish, hardware, accessories or installation scope. Compare the full specification.
What should a carpentry quotation state clearly?
Ask for cabinet dimensions, material specifications, door and finish details, hardware, accessories, lighting provisions, installation scope, exclusions, amendment responsibilities and warranty information.
Should I choose the cheapest carpentry quotation?
Choose the quotation that gives the clearest fit for your needs and budget. A lower price can be perfectly suitable when the specification is simpler. The important step is knowing what changed to create the lower price.
Can Smart Carpentry and traditional carpentry be used in the same home?
Yes. Different rooms and components can use different production methods and materials. The decision should follow the design, site condition, material requirement and level of local flexibility needed.
